Gingrich hits the bull’s eye, for better or worse

The science of politics is the art of partisanship. Politicians are only as strong as their opponents are weak, only as unifying as their enemies are divided. Political rhetoric can mean different things to different people for different reasons. Stump speeches and campaign slogans speak to the intended understanding of those really willing to listen and not to those hoping to understand.

Shredding the “Freshman Fifteen”

Last June, I had to buy several pairs of new pants, and I'll tell you why: during my freshman year, I gained 25 pounds. Ridiculous, I know. I saw the "Freshman 15" and raised it 10. Any positive health habits I had before going to college were left at home with my high school journals and yearbook — artifacts pointing to an earlier time.

If we’re confined to this reality, it can’t hurt to dream big

The natural world's an astounding thing. I don't mean your backyard, the Nature Preserve or the menagerie of beasts that roam State Street during all odd hours of the week. I mean something much grander than that. A myriad of chemical reactions, laws of physics and biological phenomena all work together and, almost as if by magic, form a universe that somehow just works.
